Overcoming wireless backhaul challenges with less resources

Speed of deployment

At MWC 2017, we asked mobile operators to share their key wireless backhaul challenges on the road to 5G. The results weren’t surprising.

26% said they are challenged by the speed of deployment.

This challenge is relevant to mobile operators that need to massively deploy cell sites as part of their network densification effort (which will gain momentum as 5G networks mature), as well as to ISPs and CLECs that differentiate their service (compared to the ILEC) based on the speed of service establishment.

For all operators, service deployment has a dramatic effect on business performance as it is a major factor in their time-to-market and time-to-revenue.

It is important to understand that speed of deployment is derived from the entire lifecycle of the service provisioning project. This lifecycle starts with the identification of the need and then continues with detailed planning, equipment selection and acquisition, equipment stocking, installation, commissioning, and finally, maintenance.

While the speed of deployment is commonly associated with the installation and commissioning (I&C) phase, and the other phases are considered as linear, fixed-in-time building blocks, there are ways to expedite the entire lifecycle and, in this manner, benefit from faster time- to-market, more revenue, and better competitiveness.

What’s the solution?

As mentioned above, the installation and commissioning phase is the main factor affected by speed of deployment. During this phase, it is essential to reduce the time required to deploy a service and also important to reduce the level of skills required to perform I&C tasks and to maximize the first-time-rite success ratio, and eliminate additional and unnecessary visits to the site.

Multiple tools are available for this, including installation wizards that facilitate basic equipment installation in a very short timeframe and with very basic skills. These tools make the installation task as simple as a basic application installation on a computer or a mobile device.

An additional tool is an Easy Mounting Kit, which enables a very accurate and fast link alignment procedure. This is extremely important for mmW links as narrow E-Band or V-Band beams require precise alignment that may constitute a lengthy task without such tools.

In addition, a service that creates node-specific configuration files completely changes the methodology of this process. In this case, the configuration task is very short and simple as it only involves downloading a file to the element.

Finally, Easy Set Radios is a capability that makes the diplexers, which set the sub-band for each link, field replaceable. This capability shortens the I&C phase, speeds up the plan-buy-stock process, and simplifies the maintenance, stocking, and spare management phase.
